Spotting Tips Accidents and spills happen. It's just a part of life. Below is a guide to help assist you in taking care of these everyday annoyances in between professional cleaning.
Remember, TIME is the enemy when something gets spilled onto your carpet or upholstery. The longer a spot sits on the carpet, the more likely it will be that it permanently sets in. This is especially true for pet stains.
Before I list the spotting tips, I would like to go over some routine vacuuming that will help prolong the life of your carpet. Vacuuming is the most effective way to prevent wear and tear on your carpet. Vacuuming on a regular basis will lift dirt and soil that if left on the carpet will wear it out prematurely. This is because when you walk on your carpet, if there's some dirt, it will act like sand paper to the fibers. Dirt is abrasive and every day traffic will cause it to damage the fibers so they don't reflect light correctly. This is why traffic areas will look dull and dingy more so than other areas of the carpet. This damage can not be undone. So please protect your investment and vacuum regularly.
Some general tips to keep in mind:
- Always use a clean white cloth when blotting up stains. A cloth with patterns or colors may bleed onto the carpet, making a bigger mess.
- Scrape up and remove as much of the material that is on the carpet as possible. If possible, use a wet/dry vacuum to get up what ever is on the carpet before applying any cleaner.
- When you apply a cleaning agent to the carpet, always blot the spot. DO NOT RUB! This may cause the spot to spread and even push it into the backing of the carpet.
Pet urine / vomit / feces:
Pet spots are the most common problem I encounter as a professional carpet cleaner. That is why I am listing it first. Please note: These are just temporary solutions to prevent the spots from setting. It's critical that you setup an appointment to have the spots professionally cleaned to ensure that the spot doesn't set. We also have odor neutralizers that are more effective than any consumer product.
Urine: Mix together 1 teaspoon of mild detergent, 1 teaspoon of white vinegar and 1 quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the affected area. Repeat the procedure until the urine stain is removed. Once the area is dry, vacuum the area gently.
Vomit: Immediately start blotting up as much of the vomit as possible. Then continue by diluting the spot with a mixture of baking soda and water or club soda. Next, apply a solution of 10 parts water, and one part ammonia to the spot. Rinse the area with cold water and let it dry. Once the area is dry, vacuum.
Feces: Remove as much excess feces as possible. Then mix one teaspoon of neutral detergent with a cup of luke-warm water and blot the affected area. Rinse the area with clean water, and blot dry.

Grease / Tar:
Put a small amount of Fast Orange (This can usually be found at your local Auto Zone) on the spot. Blot it with a paper towel a couple of times and let it sit for 10 minutes. Don't rub in the Fast Orange because it contains pumice with can be abrasive to the carpet fibers. After it has had time to work, rinse using small amount of water and blot up with a paper towel. Continue until all the Fast Orange is removed and the spot is just slightly damp. You may have to repeat the whole process a couple time to get all the grease or tar out.
Ink:
First, gather a white cloth and Rubbing Alcohol (90% isopropyl alcohol is recommended). Pour a small amount of the rubbing alcohol on the spot and let it sit for a minute. Then dab at it lightly with the white cloth. Do Not rub. Rubbing will only push the spot further into the pile. Continue this until the spot is gone. After the spot is gone, rinse with a small amount of water, and dab it up with a clean white towel. This will help to remove the alcohol from the carpet.
Red Wine:
Pour a small amount of club soda on the effected area. Try not to over saturate it. The club soda will help to lift the stain from the carpet fibers. Once the club soda has sat for a couple minutes, blot up with a white towel (remember to not use any towel with a pattern to prevent color transfer). If some of the stain still remains, pour some salt onto the area and call me at 716-679-4546 to setup an appointment. The salt will help to keep the stain from setting until I am able to take care of the spot.
